The topic we will be covering today is …

Why Are We So Unhealthy?

We do not consume quality nutrients.

Typically most are eating products that are in boxes or cans that have been highly processed. These foods do not feed our cells.  They simply fill our bodies.  Nutrient dense foods are those foods that are as close to the natural state as possible.

Standard American Diet (SAD)

As Americans our diet consist of fast foods or boxed foods that provide little nutritional value.

These foods leave you always wanting more.  Our food cravings then make us overeat.  We should stick to a nutrient dense whole foods diet.  Have you ever been guilty of overeating apples?

The bottom line is that the food industries are not trying to promote our health.  I believe that greed has taken over the food industry.

The Standard American Diet perpetuates an unending cycle of poor health.

Lifestyle

The final reason we are so unhealthy is our failure to live a balanced lifestyle.  In previous post I have gone over the 4 keys to living a balanced lifestyle.

We neglect our health due to the simple fact that we are so busy.  We either choose not to eat or to eat fast foods.  Then we are inside all day not moving around or getting fresh air.  When we get tired due to working late hours we turn to caffeine to keep us awake.  Then when we get home we just “veg out” in front of the TV loading up on calories.  Then of course we eat a quick processed food dinner.

It is easy to see why we are so unhealthy.

Just like water, good food, exercise and oxygen our bodies need rest in or to function optimally. There are a number of illnesses today that are stress related.  Lack of rest and stress cause us to gain weight.  So instead of turning to your doctor for help sleeping and getting drugs that ultimately interfere  with healthy sleep cycles consider the following…

Although the population of these microbes is large, they are normal and generally do not cause any harm. They actually help to keep pathogenic microbes out. Once you introduce a supplement such as Radical Shield, some of those microbes may initially die as a result of new elevated-dose nutrient exposure. Before long, however, they develop resistance and are able to live happily under the more positive nutrient conditions. Many supplements can cause diarrhea when you start taking them, especially if you have never taken them before. If you have never taken a vitamin C supplement and suddenly begin taking 4 grams a day, you are more likely to suffer from diarrhea than if you take lower amounts. The E. coli bacteria, which make up perhaps 2/3 of the dry weight of feces, cannot initially tolerate high levels of vitamin C. They need time to adapt to it. Until then the E. coli die and you’ve got diarrhea. Once your body acclimates to the new levels of vitamin C, the E. coli are able to adapt and survive to do their job. Then you live happily ever after.

A survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on over 37,000 Americans, who were chosen to represent a cross-section of all Americans, revealed that over 80% of the participants were deficient in one or more essential nutrients. The FDA’s recommended daily allowance is often not enough. For example, the FDA says 200 micrograms of folic acid is enough, that 1.7 milligrams of vitamin B-6 will do, and that 12 micrograms of B-12 is sufficient.

These three nutrients are extremely important in dealing with a toxic metabolite, which is produced as a normal byproduct of your metabolism. It’s not just oil refineries that produce toxic waste. Every animal does, too. One of these toxic wastes – which is very important in long-lived animals like human beings – is called homocysteine. You make it from methionine in your diet. If you have enough vitamin B-6, folic acid and vitamin B-12, you can convert it to a beneficial substance – the antioxidant known as cystathionine. Conversely, you could recycle it back into methionine. However, if you do not have enough B-6, B-12 and folic acid, (especially if you’re on a diet that’s rich in animal protein – which generally has a lot of methionine in it) you can end up with elevated levels of homocysteine that can lead to atherosclerosis, blood clots or strokes.

The FDA is now requiring fortification with folic acid for specific foods like pasta. Even so, it is estimated that only approximately 25% of American women will be getting 400 micrograms of folic acid a day from their food supply. So it’s important to take a supplement. In 2002 the American Medical Association (historically not a proponent of nutritional supplements) recommended for the first time that all adults take a good multiple vitamin. They based this recommendation on years of clinical research verifying that people who take a multiple vitamin have fewer illnesses and generally enjoy better health than those who don’t. Research has also shown that folic acid supplements taken before and during pregnancy reduce the risk of neural tube defects in newborn children. It’s also becoming evident that folic acid may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease caused by the elevated levels of homocysteine.

Three capsules per day of Radical Shield™ contain 800 micrograms of folic acid, as well as health-promoting amounts of vitamins B-6 and B-12.

In a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Rimm et al. 1998;279:359-364) there was a 5.8% decrease in cardiovascular risk with each additional 100 micrograms of folic acid taken per day. We have 266 micrograms of folic acid in each Radical Shield™ capsule; there is no suggested RDA at this time. Therefore by taking three capsules a day, you’re going to get approximately 800 micrograms. Similarly, in the vitamin B12 department, we have 33 micrograms in each Radical Shield capsule, which is 550% of the RDA. And of course if you take three of those per day, you’re going to be getting nearly 20 times the RDA of vitamin B12. With B6, we have 15.5 milligrams in each Radical Shield capsule, which is 760% of the RDA. So if you take three servings per day, you’re going to get pretty close to 25 times the RDA.
Homocysteine has been looked at as a causal factor of cardiovascular disease since 1972. Dr. Kilmer McCully wrote about the detrimental effects of homocysteine. It’s taken a long time and a lot of studies for this relationship to be generally accepted. Of course, it’s taken even longer for the FDA to accept and, in fact, there isn’t any accepted health claim by the FDA for folic acid as a way of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease; not yet. The FDA still hasn’t approved such a claim.
JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) published a study, in its February 4, 1998 issue, recognizing homocysteine as an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis. JAMA also indicates that B6 and folate may help prevent coronary heart disease, for which strong scientific evidence has been accumulating for over 20 years.

Our bodies were made to move.  Exercise is an important element in any health and wellness program.  We need both cardiovascular and resistance exercises daily.  If your interest is in weight loss then it is important to understand that muscle is key in preventing weight  gain.

A gym membership may be helpful but certainly isn’t the only way to burn fat and build muscles.

Exercising is not all that difficult if you love it.  When you feed your body properly then you have more energy.  You actually begin to crave movement.

As you start to eat properly and supplement daily you will begin to have the energy to get moving around once again.  Instead of spending loads of money purchasing equipment or a gym membership consider walking for 30 minutes each day.

This will not only get you some exercise but it will also give you the opportunity to breath fresh air.  To make your daily walking routines more exciting try finding other people to walk with. This way you can have some conversation and even some accountability.

If you are unable to get outside due to the weather why not try walking around your home of office while on the phone.  Do you have a favorite TV Show?  If so then walk in place while watching your show.

What is learned helplessness?

Many people live their lives full of depression and hopelessness. Pharmaceutical companies are making a fortune from people who believe drugs are the only answer. Watch television and you’ll be offered a free sample of popular antidepressants. The idea that a person could benefit instead by taking nutritional supplements has been studied since at least 1986.

In important ways, humans are no different than the lab rats in the learned helplessness study. The factors of learned helplessness, as you will see, could be affecting many people. In this experiment, rats in a closed cage were made helpless by a series of hundreds of harmless yet scary shocks. When the wall separating them from an escape was eventually removed, the rats remained. They quivered inside their cage bound by their learned helplessness. Even though they were physically capable of jumping out, they no longer recognized the opportunity.

The outcome was altered in a positive way when the biochemistry of the rats was altered. Scientists found after examining the brains of these animals that they were depleted of noradrenaline. This is the factor that enabled the rats to try to get out and, when depleted, it eliminated their ability to continue to try to get out. They had developed learned helplessness.

Then it was found that if you supplemented the rats’ diet with precursors to noradrenaline, such as phenylalanine or tyrosine, they would quickly unlearn the helplessness and start jumping out. Even more interesting, if the rats were given these supplements at the beginning of the experiment they were much more resistant to becoming helpless, no matter how long the shocks went on.

Too often, we are bound by our belief that the “walls” around us prevent us from achieving our goals. Even when our “learned helplessness” walls come down, we can remain in our mental paralysis. We may know what to do intellectually but, as the rat study indicates, we can be predisposed by our biochemical mental state to accept our fate, just as if a wall surrounded us.

This study provides a very important lesson for humans. That success in life depends less on your IQ, education or connections than on your persistence.

The difference between someone who is successful and someone who is not is often the ability to continue toward a goal, even though they’re encountering difficulties along the way.

Why are neurotransmitters so important?

Everything that you do begins in your brain – every thought, every memory, and every will to move a muscle. Everything that goes on in your body happens because of the release of neurotransmitters. Mental Fitness formulations were created in the early 70’s. Studies show that choline produces a neurotransmitter in your brain known as acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters are not drugs; they’re natural substances made by neurons in your brain from nutrients in your diet. The neurotransmitters transmit nerve signals across the synapses from one nerve to another. They’re a basic substrate for the transmission of information in your brain.

The amount of activity that you can perform has a lot to do with the supply of the neurotransmitters that are available to your brain. That supply, in turn, depends on the availability of raw materials the brain receives from your diet or from supplements.

One fascinating statistic is that 80% of the population does not get the FDA’s recommended daily allowance of one or more of the essential nutrients you need to make the most important neurotransmitters, dopamine and noradrenaline. So it is understandable that the number one complaint doctors get from their patients is that they feel chronically tired or fatigued. Now we hasten to warn against the assumption that if you are chronically weary then all you need is one of our supplements containing phenylalanine and co-factors. You may have a medical condition, which needs to be treated by a doctor. If you feel chronically tired, go to a doctor; have him or her do lab work for you. If everything checks out then EnergyFix®/ BrainFix™ may be your best solution for feeling better.

The problem we face is not the availability of precursors. Phenylalanine is a precursor of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline, for example, and is available in the typical diet. Most of it, however, may be squandered through competition with other amino acids for transport across the blood-brain barrier or used for other purposes such as building proteins or for gluconeogenesis (making glucose from amino acids). Co-factors are also an issue. If you go into a health food store, you’ll be able to find phenylalanine capsules easily. Sometimes you take them and something happens; you get more energized. Many times nothing at all happens. Part of that is because other nutrients such as vitamin B6 and vitamin C, folic acid and copper are needed in order to convert phenylalanine into noradrenaline and dopamine. These are essential nutrients that are required as co-factors to enzymes that are involved in the process of conversion. These materials – the copper and the vitamin B6 – are also required to convert phenylalanine into beta phenylethylamine, which is a neuromodulator in your brain that modulates the effects of noradrenaline and dopamine and probably some other neurotransmitters as well.

When these formulations were designed the specific pathways along which these nutrients operate were studied. Once it was discovered that noradrenaline and dopamine were being depleted by excessively hard work, the obvious question to answer was how does the brain make them. It is important to know what nutrients, enzymes and co-factors are required? Most of this has been known since the mid-1960’s. The metabolic pathway charts, which show each step in the process of going from phenylalanine to noradrenaline, are widely and readily available.

Experiments have shown how much noradrenaline can be produced. One experiment involved army personnel who had to fly halfway around the world and then engage in simulated combat. They used a related amino acid, tyrosine, as a supplement. They found that tyrosine could help fight the fatigue and brain fade that occur. Another study involved the breakdown products of noradrenaline and other neurotransmitters that are found in the urine after various kinds of activities. It is known that more of the breakdown products of noradrenaline appear after mentally fatiguing activities, such as working long hours.

In an experiment performed on office workers in Japan who were given difficult mental tasks to perform, it was discovered that, if the difficult mental tasks went on even for a couple of hours, a supplement didn’t make a drastic difference. However, in an all-day task of eight hours or more, supplements made a real difference – particularly as the day wore on – in terms of the person’s alertness and ability to perform.

BrainFix at Night

If you are going to study at night but don’t feel like you need a physical energy boost, then BrainFix™ taken alone works wonderfully. Your body can make noradrenaline and dopamine during the day and night. The difference is that at night you don’t use them as fast as during the day. Your brain isn’t running as fast and you’re not making as many decisions. You do not have to remember as much information. You make noradrenaline at night considerably faster than you use it and you store it in the synaptic vesicles. When you wake up in the morning you’ll literally have a big discharge of it, in your brain and in the rest of your body.

There are a few people whose discharge system for noradrenaline doesn’t work correctly, and they may take literally half an hour to get themselves out of bed. If they were to just suddenly stand up, they will literally pass out and fall flat on the floor. There’s not enough noradrenaline to support the necessary level of blood pressure. This condition is a particular type of hypotension that occurs on arising in the morning. It’s called orthostatic hypotension. It’s relatively rare, but it indicates an extreme case of what can happen when noradrenaline isn’t released in your body. We’re dealing primarily with the brain. Anybody who has to work hard – particularly if they are self-employed – will find that sitting in front of a computer all day can be just as wearying as digging a ditch. Yet at the end of the day when you feel totally wiped out, it has nothing to do with having exercised your muscles to exhaustion. It’s the result of the work your brain has done. If a person gets too depleted of brain chemicals, they will lack the initiative to do things that are necessary. They may not even recognize opportunities right in front of them. One of the biggest problems in America is that many people don’t recognize and take advantage of opportunities that become available to them.

This is especially important for entrepreneurs or for people who work in the stock market. For that matter, anybody who would like to have a better job than they have now. No one gets promoted for just sitting there, doing exactly what they’re told and no more, all because of their lack of initiative.

There are people who would like to run their own business who just let the opportunities go by one after another. Eventually they discover that they’re locked into a job in which they will never get what they really want.

In this edition of A Healthier You we will be discussing the topic of Fuel. Just like with an automobile our bodies require the right kind of fuel in order to perform optimally. The sad fact is that most of us care more about the fuel that we put into our car than the fuel we put into our bodies.  As we consider the topic of fuel for our bodies that includes food, supplements, oxygen and water.  For the remainder of this post we are going to cover these topics.

At A Seed Planted Mobile Herbs Shop we promote a diet consisting primarily of fruits, vegetable, nuts and seeds.  We promote what is call the Mucusless Diet.  Dr. John R Christopher states:

“We should not put mucus into the body faster than it can be taken and eliminated.  With this preventative diet, not only are the sinuses, the bronchi, and the lungs cleared, but also the constipating mucus (catarrh) in the tissues of the body from the head to the bottom of the feet.”

We recommend that you eliminate the following harmful and mucus forming foods from your diet.

  • Salt – This may sound difficult however it is very important to eliminate table salt from your diet.  Try using Celtic Sea Salt or powdered Kelp.
  • Eggs – No eggs should be eaten in any form.
  • Sugar and All Sugar Products – Try instead using Honey, Stevia, Agave Nectar, Sorghum Molasses, Blackstrap Molasses.
  • Meat – Eliminate all red meat from your diet.  A little white fish once a week, or a bit of young chicken that has not been fed commercial food or inoculated with formaldehyde and other anti-spoilage serums, would be all right (as these are the higher forms of edible flesh), but do not use them too often.
  • Milk – Eliminate all mucus forming dairy products including butter, cheese, cottage cheese, milk, yogurt, etc.  These substances are very high in cholesterol.  
  • Flour and Flour Products – When flour is heated and baked at high temperatures, it changes to a mucus-forming substance.  This is no longer a food, which means it has no life remaining therein.  All wholesome food is organic, where unwholesome food or dead food is inorganic.  This is the key to the whole Mucusless Diet program.

Water is actually the number 1 health food.  We should drink half of our body weight in ounces of water everyday.  This helps our body to remain hydrated and clean.  Get yourself into the habit of drinking water whenever it is available.  We have all heard about the dangers of tap water.  These are very real dangers.  Trying to be realistic at A Seed Planted Mobile Herb Shop we recommend when choosing water that you keep the following in mind.

HOW DO WE GET MORE NORADRENALINE?

Phenylalanine is a precursor of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline and is available in the typical diet. Most of it, however, may be squandered through competition with other amino acids for transport across the blood-brain barrier or used for other purposes such as building proteins or for gluconeogenesis (making glucose from amino acids). The problem we face is not just the availability of precursors. Co-factors are also an issue. If you go into a health food store, you’ll be able to find phenylalanine capsules easily. Sometimes you take them and something happens; you get more energized. Many times nothing at all happens. Part of that is because other nutrients such as vitamin B6 and vitamin C, folic acid and copper are needed in order to convert phenylalanine into noradrenaline and dopamine. These are essential nutrients that are required as co-factors to enzymes that are involved in the process of conversion. These materials – the copper and the vitamin B6 – are also required to convert phenylalanine into beta phenylethylamine, which is a neuromodulator in your brain that modulates the effects of noradrenaline and dopamine and probably some other neurotransmitters as well.

DISCOVERING HOW THE BRAIN USES NUTRIENTS

The specific pathways along which these nutrients operate has been studied and this information is used in the design of EnergyFix. Once it was discovered that noradrenaline and dopamine were being depleted by excessively hard work, the obvious question was how does the brain make them? It is important to know what nutrients, enzymes and co-factors are required. Most of this has been known since the mid-1960’s. The metabolic pathway charts, which show each step in the process of going from phenylalanine to noradrenaline, are widely and readily available.

Experiments have shown how much noradrenaline can be produced. One experiment involved army personnel who had to fly halfway around the world and then engage in simulated combat. They used a related amino acid, tyrosine, as a supplement. They found that tyrosine could help fight the fatigue and brain fade that occur. Another study involved the breakdown products of noradrenaline and other neurotransmitters that are found in the urine after various kinds of activities. It is known that more of the breakdown products of noradrenaline appear after mentally fatiguing activities, such as working long hours.

In an experiment performed on office workers in Japan who were given difficult mental tasks to perform it was discovered that if the difficult mental tasks went on for only a couple of hours a supplement didn’t make a drastic difference. However, in an all-day task of eight hours or more supplements made a real difference – particularly as the day wore on – in terms of the person’s alertness and ability to perform.

HOW DO I TAKE ENERGYFIX FOR BEST RESULTS?

Do not take EnergyFix® with proteins. Wait at least one hour after consuming protein and then do not consume proteins for an hour after taking EnergyFix. When your stomach disassembles protein certain amino acids can interfere with the transport of phenylalanine across your stomach into your blood stream and particularly across your blood-brain barrier into the brain.
There are protease enzymes in your saliva that start the digestive process as soon as you start chewing. When protein reaches your stomach it starts to be taken apart by protease enzymes. Our bodies are very efficient at breaking down food into usable nutrients.
